I've just watched Avatar for the first time. Okay and for the second and third time, back to back to back, over 3 days.

Yes, I'm a bit behind the social learning curve when it comes to new releases, but I must tell you that our NetFlix queue, although at the Three-At-A-Time option, is under the very watchful eye and control of my film-adoring husband.

This is not to say that he's dictatorial. He really is not. He's very amenable to me placing films in the queue and I'm free to get whichever movies I want ~ but ... and it's a big but: I like to watch films with him. And he really really *really* doesn't like anything that smacks of sci-fi.

For me, movies or books, it isn't about 'sci-fi'. Or costume pictures. or mysteries. or coming of age. It's about the story. The story is everything and, when told correctly, I don't care if it's a silly romance about the sinking of the Titantic.

What? You say there's another film I need to catch?  (pffft... just teasing)

Anyway, I think Avatar's story was very good. Granted, it's pretty much Dances with Wolves in Blue Bodies on a Different Planet ... but the story of the struggle between Nature (capital "N") and Technology for Man's Soul is a timeless one; always beautiful, always interesting. As a side note, if you're up for a very good (and tragic) re-telling of this battle, catch Jeremy Irons and Robert De Niro in 1986's 'The Missionary'.

This music isn't from the film. But it could be. And I was reminded of the song during the movie's credits.  But, if I'm to be honest here, any excuse to get Peter Gabriel in the queue is a good excuse as far as I'm concerned. He's always interesting, always good.

Okay. So this isn't one of my blog posts The Man will like. But it's okay: he'll still read it. And I'll probably ask to put Avatar on the NetFlix queue again this week.

Enjoy the video!

So, does your husband really call himself "the Man"? What a conceited bore! Hmmmph!
